Course of River.

The river originates from the Gangotri glacier in Himalayas. It joins the Alaknanda river in Devprayag. It enters the plains in Haridwar then it flows through the northern plains. It has mainly eleven tributaries namely Yamuna, Ramganga, Gomti, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda, Tamsa, Son, Punpun and Damodar. On reaching it's mouth it distributes into two distributaries one is Hooghly which goes in west bengal and another is Padma whoch goes in Bangladesh. River Padma later joins the Brahmaputra and returns in India. Rivers Ganga and Brahmaputra together make the world's largest delta called the Sunderban delta and finally fall into the Bay of Bengal.

Mythological origin

In indian mythology, Ganga was brought to Earth by the worship of a saint named Bhagitrath. He worshipped Lord Vishnu to allow Ganga to come to the Earth and on the advice of Lord Vishnu he also worshipped Lord Shiva for holding river Ganga in his hair and reducing her speed as the speed and volume of Ganga was so high that it could destroy the whole Earth. In the image you can see Lord Shiva retarding Ganga river and Bhagirath worshipping him.
